ZOOM ID: 81960367220 PASSCODE: csdsdelhi
This lecture will discuss mosques on the Malabar coast, from the initial spread of Islam to the present day. While some of these mosques are among the oldest in India and the Islamic world, their architecture has been neglected in the art historical literature. They seem to be a remarkable synthesis of artistic vocabularies borrowed from other Muslim regions, fused with elements drawn from local and South East Asian vernacular and temple architecture. However, their originality and historical value are today jeopardised by increasing renovation, demolition, and reconstruction works. The lecture will focus on the role of architectural and stylistic transformations in reshaping the identities of Muslim communities associated with these mosques.
