Past Connections, Contemporary Debates: India and Turkey

Symposium on ‘Past Connections, Contemporary Debates: India and Turkey’

Hitherto India and Turkey have been compared to make points about their distinct and specific understandings of modernity, secularism and leadership. While there is clearly a need for new perspectives informed by past connections and the contemporary concerns of these two nations, such studies are conspicuous by their absence.

This multi-disciplinary symposium intended to initiate and deepen academic conversations to address this gap. The aim was to search for fresh approaches and insights that might emerge from placing Turkey and India side by side. The presentations highlighted how issues and themes from one location may illuminate the other. Commonalities and contrasts from the fields of intellectual production as well as culture, politics and society was investigated.
