Robert A. Yelle delivered a lecture on ‘The Use and Abuse of the Category of the Secular’ on 29 January 2019 at CSDS. The lecture was chaired by Baidik Bhattacharya. Attempting a modest intervention in contemporary debates, the speaker argues that neither religious diversity, nor toleration, nor a separation between the religious and the political domains alone represents an adequate definition of secularism.

Mark C. Elliott delivered the 13th Giri Deshingkar Memorial Lecture on ‘The Historical Silk Road and the BRI’ on 12 February 2019 at India International Centre, New Delhi. The lecture was jointly organized by the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Institute of Chinese Studies, Delhi and India International Centre, New Delhi. Giri Deshingkar Memorial Lectures are instituted in the memory of Professor Giri Deshingkar, former Director of the CSDS and founder member of the Institute of Chinese Studies.

Guy G. Stroumsa delivered a lecture on ‘Anquetil Duperron and the Origins of Oriental Philology: Orientalism is a Humanism’ on 26 February 2019 at CSDS. The lecture was chaired by Rajeev Bhargava. Abraham Hyacinthe Anquetil Duperron (1731-1805) was a pioneer of Oriental Philology.
