The Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), Delhi, is inviting applications for the posts of:

Associate Professor

•  Scale: 37400-67000, GP 9000. Based on the recommendations of the 6th pay commission. This will be revised to 7th pay after getting the approval of ICSSR and the Board of Governors.

CSDS is one of India’s best-known research institutes in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities, functioning under the aegis of the Indian Council of Social Science Research. The Centre places a premium on intellectual autonomy and collaborative research and welcomes scholars with diverse research interests, pursuing these through varied methodologies.

Since its inception in 1963, CSDS has emerged as a premier public institution for the study of political, social, cultural and technological transitions in India and the global South. The Centre is currently inviting applications under the following research areas:

•    Contemporary History: scholars whose research contributes to an understanding of the present through longer genealogies of colonial and pre-colonial pasts.  Scholars whose work combines empirical research with conceptual histories are especially encouraged to apply. The position is open to scholars from all social sciences and humanities disciplines.

•  Media/Cinema Studies: scholars working in media studies, including cinema, digital media, sound studies and media arts. While applicants may be from the humanities and social sciences, we are looking for scholars with demonstrable research and publications in media scholarship. Applicants combining fieldwork, archival, and practice-based research skills and a grasp of conceptual debates in media studies will be preferred.

•  Urban Studies: scholars whose work addresses historical and contemporary urban formations in India and the global South. We are especially interested in scholars whose research contributes to an understanding of urban infrastructure, environment, health and more-than-human cities. The position is open to scholars from all social sciences and humanities disciplines.

Qualifications:

Essential qualifications:

•  Good academic record with a PhD in any Social Sciences and Humanities disciplines.
•    A Master’s degree with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade on a point scale (relaxation of 5 % for SC/ST candidates).
•  Minimum eight years of research/ teaching experience in an academic/ research position equivalent to that of an Assistant Professor in a university, college or research institute (excluding the period of PhD research).
•    Minimum five publications as books and/or research/policy papers. Chapters in edited academic books are considered the same as research papers in journals.
•    Contribution to educational innovation, design of new courses and technologically mediated teaching with evidence of research guidance.*
     *The shortlisting committee may also consider applications from candidates who are based at institutions that do not offer opportunities for teaching/ research guidance, provided that the candidate  has an outstanding publication record.

Desirable Qualifications:

•  Demonstrated capacity to undertake high-quality, independent research.
•  Demonstrated capacity to raise grants and administer research projects.
•    Demonstrated capacity for institutional collaboration.
•    Proficiency in at least one Indian language other than English.

Selection Procedure:

•    A screening-cum-shortlisting committee will prepare a shortlist of candidates based on the quality of the applications, relevance to advertised themes and API scores.
•    Merely fulfilling the minimum criteria will not entitle a candidate to be shortlisted.
•    CSDS will only inform those candidates who are shortlisted. CSDS will not entertain communication from any other applicant.
•  Short-listed candidates will be required to submit supporting evidence for their API scores. Failure to provide supporting evidence will result in disqualification.
•    Prior to being interviewed, short-listed candidates will be required to present their research in a special colloquium at CSDS, either in person or virtually.
•    A duly constituted Selection Committee will interview short-listed candidates.
•    The decision of the Selection committee will be final.

CSDS reserves the right to increase or decrease the number of advertised posts, if circumstances so demand. CSDS reserves the right to keep posts vacant if no suitable candidates are found.
