Anna Bhau Sathe (1920-1969) was a writer, thinker, leader and popularly known as lokshahir in Maharashtra. He was not formally educated; however, with his active involvement in the movement, he produced 32 novels, 13 short stories collection, one travelogue, hundreds of songs, many Povadas and street plays etc. His writings focus on class, caste, gender inequalities and exploitation. He transformed and used folk traditions like Tamasha, Jalsa, Lavani performances to communicate the message of social change among masses. His intellectual and activist journey from communist to Ambedkarite is inspiring new generation of Dalitbahujan scholars and activists in the ongoing struggles for justice and dignity in Maharashtra.
Chandraiah Gopani is Associate Professor at G.B. Pant Social Science Institute, Prayagraj, UP. His areas of research interest include Critical Theory, Caste, Dalit Studies, Intellectual Traditions, Literature, Youth, Democracy and Development. He is working on a manuscript on ‘Justice for Invisible Dalits: Mobilisation and Struggles of Most Marginalised Dalits’.
