Yoga has an enormous range of meanings across many Indian languages, though most often it names psychophysical practice or philosophy. In a collaborative project with Christian Novetzke, Sunila S. Kale argues for an expansion of scholarly understanding of yoga to embrace its long-standing political conceptualization. Their book, The Yoga of Power, charts a genealogy for yoga as a political concept in Sanskrit texts and its re-emergence that names a variety of anti-colonial politics in the modern period. Sketching the argument about this register of the term, she will describe one articulation of yoga as political thought and practice situated in Princely Aundh from the 1910s to the 1940s.

Sunila S. Kale is Associate Professor in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. Her books include Electrifying India (2014), Mapping Power (2018) and The Yoga of Power (forthcoming 2024).

Prathama Banerjee is Professor at Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi.
