Chandan Gowda delivered a lecture on ‘Another India or A Few Moves in Decolonization’ on 19 September 2023 at CSDS. It was chaired by Rakesh Pandey. The lecture was jointly organized by CSDS and ICAS:MP.
In this talk, the speaker went over the intellectual impulses behind the essays in his book, Another India: Events, Memories, People, which embody various facets of the decolonization imperative. Several of the essays summon past episodes and images that modern social science concepts evacuate readily. Recalling these, which have a living narrative and moral presence in the present, is to create a wider and more participative conversational space and help make intellectual activity more meaningful. These acts of ‘recovery’ disclose a variety of humanistic legacies, correct at times the distortions about history and tradition, and revisit the claims of discontinuity attributed to colonial rule.
Chandan Gowda is Ramakrishna Hegde Chair Professor of Decentralization and Development at the Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bengaluru. He has edited Theatres of Democracy: Selected Essays of Shiv Visvanathan (2016), The Way I See It: A Gauri Lankesh Reader (2018) and A Life in the World (2019), a book of autobiographical interviews with UR Ananthamurthy.
Rakesh Pandey is Associate Professor at Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi.
