The book 50 Years of The Indian Emergency: Lessons for Democracy marks the 50th anniversary of one of the defining moments of Indian history. It examines the Emergency and its aftermath from diverse perspectives–political, historical, legal, economic, philosophical, experiential and cultural. It explores how the Emergency transformed Indian polity and shaped law enforcement and penal practices, the media, student movements, judicial responses, subaltern politics and literary expression.

Peter Ronald deSouza was the director of Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla (2007-2013) and former Professor at CSDS, Delhi. His recent publication is, with Harsh Sethi 50 Years of The Indian Emergency: Lessons for Democracy (Orient Black Swan, 2025).

Harish Khare is a Senior Journalist who served as the Media Advisor in the Prime Minister's Office (2009 to 2012).

Nazima Parveen is Associate Professor, Faculty of Humanities, STG University, Gurugram. 

Ujjwal Kumar Singh is Senior Professor, Department of Political Science, University of Delhi.

Ashis Nandy is a political psychologist, social theorist and Honorary Fellow at CSDS, Delhi.
