Sanjay Kumar is a Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Studies and Deputy Director of Lokniti, a research program of CSDS. His research interest for the past several years has been studying the electoral system, analyzing the electoral politics and mapping of changing patterns of democracy. While India remains his primarily research locale, his research interest extends to other South Asian countries as well. He had been trying to study the functioning of the electoral process with reference to issues like patterns and strategies of electoral mobilization, and issues of electoral violence. Sanjay's research draws heavily from the empirical studies.
He has directed various National and State level studies conducted by the CSDS. The national surveys directed by him include, the National Election Studies, (NES) in 1998, 1999, 2004, and 2009 and various round of bi-annual survey “State of the Nation Survey” (SONS). Among various state level studies directed by him, the benchmark survey “Delhi Survey 1998 and 2003”, with sample size of over 12000 and 14,000 respondents, are the most important.
He had also been the country coordinator (India) for the State of Democracy in South Asia (SDSA) study conducted in five South Asian countries (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal). He had been core team member of the Asian Barometer survey, led by Prof, Takashi Inoguchi of Cho University, Tokyo, consultant with Asia Foundation’s survey undertaken in Afghanistan in year 2006, co-director of the survey State of Democracy in Nepal (with Krishan Hachhettu). He had also been an International Election Observer for observing freeness and fairness of National elections held in Thailand (2007) and in Cambodia
He is also one of the leading political analyst and political commentator for electronic and print media.
