Role of Music Director in Hindi Cinema: Lecture by Kushal Gopalka

Kushal Gopalka delivered the 5th lecture of the series Cine Sangeet Ki Anmol Virasat on ‘Emergence of the Role of Music Director in Hindi Cinema’ on 13 May 2023 at Seminar Room and Zoom. It was chaired by Ravikant.


Quite suddenly, Indian cinema found its voice in 1931 and things became different. Largely influenced by varied sources, the music makers for the new medium started to put their act in place. In this session, we musically trace the journey of the new studio employee - the music director, during the first decade of the Talking film.

Kushal Gopalka is a music lover, musicologist, historian and archivist who has written, produced documentary films and curated exhibitions, on Indian music. Residing in Mumbai, he regularly makes researched musical presentations in India and abroad.

Ravikant is Associate Professor at Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi.
