Political Atheism of Periyar: Lecture by Karthick Ram Manoharan

Karthick Ram Manoharan delivered a lecture on ‘The Political Atheism of Periyar E.V. Ramasamy’. It was chaired by Nishikant Kolge.

Periyar E.V. Ramasamy (1879-1973) was a rationalist anti-caste leader from South India. Known for his critical views on caste, nationalism, religion, gender, and social justice, he earned a controversial reputation in his lifetime and after. In this lecture, the speaker draws from his recent book Periyar: A Study in Political Atheism (Orient BlackSwan 2022) to provide a broad overview of Periyar's radical thoughts. He reads Periyar in the anarchist tradition and presents Periyar as a critical thinker who has much to offer for contemporary conversations on secularism and social justice.

Karthick Ram Manoharan is Assistant Professor, Social Sciences, at National Law School, Bengaluru. Prior to this, he was Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow at the University of Wolverhampton. He is the author of Frantz Fanon: Identity and Resistance (Orient BlackSwan 2019) and the co-editor of Rethinking Social Justice (Orient BlackSwan 2020).

Nishikant Kolge is Associate Professor at Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi.
